Chote Nawab, meaning “Little Prince”, is among the hottest culinary additions to the Murray Hill restaurant scene. Inspired by the varying tastes of the Nawabs (princes) of different states within India, the restaurant is led by celebrated worldclass chef, Hemant Mathur, and showcases regional Awadhi cuisine most notably from the city of Lucknow in Northern India.
The Nawabs of India, mainly in the city of Lucknow were very much the foodies of their day, known for their elaborate royal kitchens and hospitality and of course their kababs. As well as the popular kababs, the restaurant features Biryani from Hyderabad, made with goat, spices and rice traditionally cooked “dum” style over steaming coals, as well as delectable dishes from the coastal state Andhra Pradesh. Menu items include Tunde Ke Kabab, a “melt in your mouth” Lucknowi lamb kabab, with minced lamb and spices, Dum Biryani, a Hyderabadi rice dish, cooked “dum”- style, or sealed pot style, served with a choice of goat or chicken, house blend spices, and garden herbs, Dum Kokur, a sealed pot chicken curry on the bone; and for vegetarians, the menu offers dishes such as Baghara Baigan, a Hyderabadi eggplant.
Chote Nawab combines modern design elements, such as concrete walls, with Indian themed murals to create a contemporary, yet warm ambiance, which is a reflection of its in-house spice blends and authentic culinary style. Mathur brings a taste of the“Little Prince’s” kitchen to New York City, while maintaining his authentic restaurant standards. Mathur owns several other highly-rated Indian restaurants in New York – Chola, Chote Nawab, Haldi, Kokum and Malai Marke – each one showcasing its own regional cuisine.
