From a sprawling 6,000-square-foot stylish salon on Fifth Avenue to some of the most popular hair products on the market – you’ll recognize their teal bottles – Rita Hazan has taken the hair industry to higher and healthier heights!
She might be known as the ruler of ravishing roots, but Rita said her own roots helped shaped her path. Growing up as a first-generation American in Brooklyn to an Egyptian Jewish family, Rita was inspired to work hard and has since built a hairstyling empire. Rita’s own unruly hair led to the realization that she wanted to pursue her hairdressing dreams. “My hair has always been challenging for me. I realized at a young age that I was able to control my hair, as well as the hair of many others, such as friends and family, so I knew this was something I truly loved and was good at, so I went to beauty school.”
After emerging on the sleek strand scene at a young age and appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Rita went on to become the go-to stylist for everyone from J.Lo to Mariah Carey. With clients including celebrities as well as loyal locals, Rita has indeed become one of the most powerful females to dominate the industry. “I never looked at myself as a woman in the hair industry. I just focused on being the best at what I did. I worked extremely hard. I put in long hours with love and had a great time doing it. Only after I opened my salon did I realize I was the only female colorist and salon owner.”
She might be found touring with Beyoncé at times, but Rita remains very hands-on, whether it’s hiring, training, or coloring her clients’ hair. “My level of high expectation and client service is something only I have the vision for. I believe it all stems from the owner and foundation. If your employees see you can and will do any and every job, they will treat your business the same.”
At Rita Hazan, you can get glammed up for a night downtown in no time. After all, the salon offers multiple services, including manicures and makeup, laser treatments, waxing and facials. They also pride themselves on their personalized service and in ensuring every client enjoys a quick and enjoyable experience. According to Rita, the biggest trends of the season include “natural and warm tones for the fall and multi-dimensional hair that looks sophisticated and expensive. Everyone is trained and excellent, so you can see any colorist or stylist and leave gorgeous!”
Even those who haven’t visited the Rita Hazan Salon yet can keep their roots looking radiant with Rita’s products, which can be found in stores around the country. The brand currently offers a Root Concealer Stick and Spray, True Color Shampoo and Conditioner, Ultimate Shine Gloss, Triple Threat, Weekly Remedy, Lock + Block and Shine Balm, in addition to three new products launching in February.
This native New Yorker enjoys catering to her clientele on the Upper East Side, but she also loves living on the Lower East Side. “It’s raw and still has old New York character,” exclaimed Rita. “I love brunch in New York City. It’s such an experience.” She also loves traveling with her husband, especially to Anguilla, her favorite island; she will be spending Thanksgiving in the Cayman Islands.
From Fifth Avenue to a fine retailer near you, Rita Hazan has indeed made her mark on the hair and beauty business!
