About the New York Junior League
New York Junior League (NYJL) is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Since 1901, the NYJL has been a leader in identifying and responding to unmet community needs. Through direct service, collaborations with other community organizations, advocacy initiatives, and women’s leadership programming, the NYJL provides a positive force for change within the communities it serves.
The NYJL believes that all women, children, and families should have equal opportunity, the resources to unlock their potential, and the structures to support them.
The NYJL welcomes all women who value its mission and is committed to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organizations, and communities.
Each year more than 2,800 trained volunteers donate their time to better the lives of women and children in New York City. The NYJL works with more than 50 community-based organizations and public agencies to deliver services and assistance directly to women and children in need.
About the Winter Ball
First held in 1952, the Winter Ball is one of New York City’s longest running charity galas. As the NYJL’s largest annual event, the Winter Ball raises the critical funds needed for the organization’s community programs, executed in partnership with over 50 other New York City nonprofits.
The Winter Ball honors seven women—two Outstanding Sustainers and five Outstanding Volunteers—who exemplify an exceptional commitment to volunteerism, while supporting the community efforts of the NYJL. The Winter Ball also increases awareness of important issues facing New York City residents through the presentation of the President’s Council Award, granted each year to an NYJL community partner whose work has proven particularly effective in improving the lives of New York City’s women, children, and families and with whom the NYJL closely collaborates.
This year’s Winter Ball’s Honorees included:
President’s Council Award Recipient:
Avenues for Justice (award accepted by Angel Rodriguez, Executive Director)
Robin Stratton Rivera
Dorothy Echols “Dee Dee” Scarborough
Shelby Spears Carroll
Dayna Barlow Cassidy
Leighanna Morbey Favale
Allison Davis O’Keefe.
About Avenues for Justice (the President’s Council Award Recipient):
Avenues for Justice (AFJ) keeps youth out of prison in a supervised program that provides court advocacy, tutoring, and mentorship, and gets participants the drug, alcohol, and mental health treatment and job training they need to succeed. The organization serves over 300 youths each year, and more than 90% of their graduates never commit another crime. AFJ has three primary goals.
- Intervene and reclaim young people from lives of crime.
- Give the overloaded court system a reliable alternative to incarceration.
- Make the Lower East Side and East Harlem communities safer for everyone.
The NYJL works in collaboration with Avenues for Justice, most recently through three programs.
Until 2016, the Healthy Beginnings committee mentored youth, aiming to inspire and see what is possible beyond the confines of the world they know. NYJL members volunteered in leading youth in discussions on principles such as financial planning, job interviewing, and healthy living.
Steps to Success
The Steps to Success committee has sustained the work of Healthy Beginnings, offering job skills training and presentation workshops to empower youth to present themselves professionally, prepare for the workforce, make sound financial decisions, and take steps to independent success.
The CHEF (Cooking and Health Education for Families) committee empowers youth to make life-long healthy choices by presenting hands-on cooking workshops. These workshops teach clients to make healthy and affordable snacks, breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and desserts. Additional education and activities are incorporated to increase commitment toward living a healthy lifestyle.
