Opened in 1949, Caribe Hotel is located on the edge of Puerta de Tierra neighborhood, overseeing the shore and seaside. Fun fact: it was the Hilton’s first hotel outside of the continental US. When the government of Puerto Rico put out an open bid to hoteliers for the site, founder Conrad Hilton was the only one who responded in Spanish, and the rest is, well, haute hotel history. Over the last seven decades, this stylish spot has attracted famous guests including Liz Taylor, Sophia Loren and Barack Obama among others.
Caribe Hilton has a total of 652 accommodations, all of which feature a private balcony looking out at either the garden of the resort of the scenic sites of San Juan. Suites in the hotel offer especially breathtaking and colorful views of San Juan and are furnished in minimalist décor. With a dining space and kitchenette, the 850 square foot Garden Wing King One Bedroom Suite serves as the perfect home away from home for families or groups looking for privacy and extra posh surroundings.
This relaxing resort takes its amenities to the A-list level with facilities that cater to families and those of all ages. Even the youngest guests can enjoy their stay with a kid’s pools, a game room and readily available children’s menus. Parents can also enjoy a quiet evening or explore the city with an adults only night out – after all, Caribe Hilton offers babysitting services. All guests have access to the resort’s tennis court, state-of-the-art fitness center and a private beach overlooking the pier where you can peer out at clear, ocean waves.
As one of the first international hotels to break ground on the island, Caribe Hilton fully embraces the culture of Puerto Rico, allowing you to become immersed in the fun loving and flavorful flare of this slice of paradise. Their legendary past includes stories of the famed disco club Julianna’s, where tourists and locals alike would dance the night away with some of the industry’s biggest performers. Another special creation from Caribe Hilton? The piña colada! That’s right, this iconic drink was first introduced at the hotel’s Caribar back in 1954, when bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, made it his mission to create a memorable welcome cocktail for guests. He mixed together rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice and voila – the piña colada was born! Monchito served his creation himself for 35 years at the hotel, and in 1978, the piña colada was declared as the official drink of Puerto Rico. You can still visit Caribar today.
